In constrained environments, such as sorting vegetables in a packing plant, simple summary statistics such as length–width ratio or proportion of dark pixels can be used to distinguish different objects. In a factory this can be aided by using different light sources (e.g. infra-red or ultra-violet) if it is known that different materials have different reflectance.
